West Country Fires understands how crucial it is to secure stone fireplaces following a call from a homeowner where the builder had simply stuck the stone to the wall!
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is aware of multiple instances where heavy stone components of modern fireplace surrounds have fallen, resulting in damage and injury. These incidents occurred because the fireplaces were not securely or mechanically fixed in place.
Tragically, two separate accidents led to the deaths of two young children. In both cases, the fireplace surrounds had been installed and in use for only a few months before the fatal incidents. Further investigations have revealed that, over the years, several other fatalities involving children have occurred due to similar circumstances.
Recognizing the severity of the issue, the Stone Federation of Great Britain has recently revised its guidance on the safe installation of fireplace surrounds. This 2015 guidance aims to ensure that installations are properly secured, reducing the risk of future accidents.
